Week 2

The one where she learned how to windsurf

0

It’s the end of week two on Remote Year and I *think* the craziness is dying down a bit. This week was full of opportunities to get to know my fellow remotes and Split a little better. I also overcame some serious FOMO and seem to be settling into some routines (just to be uprooted in a week or so lol). I’m continuing to LOVE this experience and have not regretted my choice for a single second.

Things I did this week:
  • KRUSHED some work on Monday. Had a meeting where one of our directors praised my and my coworker’s work on a project. #allofthefeels
  • Attempted to work from Old Town, which turned into an extended seafood lunch and then a few hours of work back at old faithful Fabrique before heading home for some real work.

Tuna Nicoise. Yes, it tasted just as good as it looks.

One more photo of Old Town for good measure

  • Taught my first acro class! So proud of all of the gals that came out! I hope it helped them realize that they’re stronger than they think 😀

One of our program leaders, Jen absolutely killing it. #proudmamamoment

  • Unexpectedly walked into a full fledged Wednesday night RY party in our coworking space WiP. Apparently wine and cheese night turned into wine night…gallon wine night
  • Faced the next morning like a champ by doing my first ever TRX workout. And I didn’t puke! (We all definitely considered it though)
  • Made the best out of what looked like a serious FOMO situation. While most of the group went to Dubrovnik this weekend, I chose to stay behind because my company is sending me down there for our company retreat in two weeks. I took the opportunity to make some new friends with the small group of “Easter Orphans” that chose to stay behind
  • While having a home cooked dinner at WiP (shoutout to Dustin for being an awesome cook!) Melissa, a Remote Nationer (a Remote Year alumni who just kept going), mentioned that she was going windsurfing on Saturday. *cue my ears perking up at the sound of water sports.* I asked if there was room for another and within an hour I was booked to go
  • Was convinced to go out on Friday night…and ended up at yup, you guessed it- CENTRAL! Still not quite sure how I made it from ‘Lets stay in and watch Lion and drink wine’ to ‘Are we having a dance off in the club right now?’ but hey, RY is all about rolling with it, and I’m starting to become a pro at that.

The Man, The Myth, The Legend…Central

Because we went with our Croatian staff members we got the local discount. #baller

  • Discovered that I’m a natural at windsurfing. Yup. We did indeed make it to windsurfing after our night out on the town. And you guys it was AWESOME.

Our two guides were locals who have been windsurfing for like 20 years combined and were just so excited that we wanted to learn their sport. They took us to an area closer to the airport that apparently has the best winds in the area and we did a session on land and then got our wetsuits on and hopped in the water to try it for real.

Can I just say that windsurfing is no joke?! We totally krushed it though- we learned how to sail upwind and downwind, and accomplished -nay perfected- several different types of turns. Oh and we fell in the water a lot too. #praisebetowetsuits

Post windsurfing dinner at Congo. I absolutely love this girl.

  • Had a spa night with Melissa instead of going out, which turned into a three-hour long chat about life and love and work and everything else under the sun. ❤️❤️
  • Worked on this magnificent blog all day Sunday until our Easter Orphan Family Dinner at WiP. Ryan and Jen cooked and wowza I can’t even tell you how awesome it was. Also, Ryan has a spicy seasoning and I forgot how much I miss spicy food. (Asia, I’m looking at you).
  • Got a little homesick. I find myself realizing more and more that I need to listen to myself and not do more than what I want to do. Knowing my limits and sticking to them is something I told myself I’d work on more this trip and after the whirlwind of the first two weeks I can feel myself starting to drift back towards that- staying in when I need it, going out when I want, politely saying no to activities I truly don’t want or have time to do. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in everything that is happening- New people! Food! Wine! Fun! Excitement! But taking time to recharge and get myself in order is just as important as all of the new experiences I’m having.
Things I’ve learned about Split/Croatian culture:
  • They LOVE bread. Every meal includes it.

My diet in Split

  • Service is slooooow- a lunch can easily take 2-3 hours and you almost always have to hunt down a waiter for your check.
  • Risotto and Seafood are the staples here. Clearly I’ve died and gone to heaven.

  • A lot of people speak English. It’s taught from elementary school up through college.
  • EVERYONE SMOKES. It’s so overwhelming. You’ll go out to a bar and everything you were wearing + your hair smells like it. We’re also pretty sure it’s the reason almost everyone in our group has a sore throat (or maybe that’s because we share so much food..)
  • Tracksuits are a THING. So is rollerblading. I don’t hate it.
  • They LOOOOOOVEE their sunglasses. I completely believe Katja, our workspace manger, when she said that people will go without food for a week but they’ll always have the newest sunglass frames. #respect
Things I miss about home:
  • Driving Emma with the top down. #Mini #LetsMotor
  • Nashville. I’ve been away from it for months but I still love and miss that city. Maybe Austin will steal my heart like Nashville did, we’ll see when I come back…if I come back 😉
  • Chick Fil A Spicy Chicken Sandwiches. I would no joke honestly sell a kidney for a SCS and a 1/2 lemonade 1/2 iced tea right now.
  • Hot Sauce.
  • Sunday dinners with my favorite couple Ilana and Matt. ❤️
  • Amazon Prime.
