Week 1

The one where she moved to Europe

1

Ahh it’s here!! Remote Year has finally started! I’m sure most of you already have heard me gush with excitement over the last few months about how exited I am for this opportunity. To be able to do my already amazing job while traveling the world with 50 other incredible likeminded remotes still seems too good to be true..but alas, it is, and here I am!

This blog is meant to serve many purposes-

  1. To document the crazy adventures I get myself in around the globe
  2. To entertain you all as you follow along with me
  3. To showcase the incredible sights I see as I travel
  4. To be an outlet for personal growth- I hope you all are as excited as I am about the personal journey this trip will be and how I will grow as a person and citizen of the world throughout it. Maybe you’ll even grow with me 🙂

Without further ado- let’s get to it!

Things I did this week:

  • Left on a 10PM flight from JFK to Oslo, Norway
  • Met up with a new remote friend, Ryan, in Oslo to spend our (17 hour) layovers together in 36°F (*ahem* 2°C) pouring rain (Oslo I still love you, even if you are cold and absurdly expensive!)

Oslo is a fascinating city- right around the corner from this was an indoor mini golf spot in a storefront, which was down the block from all sorts of ethnic food

  • Got approximately 3 hours of sleep because I had to get up at 4AM to catch my final (7AM) flight to Split! (Running on 3 hours of sleep changes your perspective on the world, I’ll tell you that much)
  • Was picked up at the Split airport by our AirBnb host’s brother (so nice!) and driven to the Pre-Remote party house

Our house was massive and had a beautiful view of the coast

  • Spent the day wandering around both our outer area of Split and going into town to the promenade to get a delicious lunch in the sunshine and palm trees

My first impression of Split: Am I on the French riviera??

  • Returned to our house in time for the rest of our pre-remotes to show up and got the party started with 2 GALLONS of wine..in a plastic bottle, because Croatia is legit like that.

All of this was only $30!

  • Explored our new workspace and MOVED INTO MY FIRST APARTMENT. It’s incredible. Two bedrooms, two balconies, an open floor plan and comfy furniture. And it’s only a 3 minute walk from the workspace. I really couldn’t have asked for anything more.

Morning tea on the balcony happens often.

  • Had my first acroyoga lesson with one of my new remotes, Daniel. Not to toot my own horn (*toot toot*) butttt I totally killed it and am so excited to continue learning this discipline over the next year.
  • Attended my first MKR dinner party- aka 20 of us got together and got just a teeeny bit rowdy at the Penthouse. Despite threats, the police were not actually called and nothing was broken #success

Ian literally jumped down a spiral staircase from the top balcony to get in this photo #champ #prostatus #wegotarunner

  • Biked to Old Town for brunch on Friday morning, despite totally waking up on the wrong side of the bed and being in a super grumpy mood. Got bike oil on the calf of my white pants which made my mood even better /sarcasm

BEFORE the bike incident

  • Ate shit trying to get on my bike back from my Friday morning Bike and Brunch… and got even more bike oil all over my white pants… which resulted in me bursting into tears on the promenade (it was just one of those days, guys)
  • ***Attempted*** to use the washer in my apartment to get the grease stains out of my pants (guys it makes no sense. None.)

Pretty sure this is written in alien

  • Got the grease stains out but TURNED MY PANTS PINK.
  • Decided not to press my luck and stayed in on Friday night when everyone else went out to Central, the one true club here. I figured that with the day I had, I would probably break an arm or get hit by a car on the way there.
  • Did not regret my decision the next morning when I felt like a million dollars for our 4 hour long Saturday RY orientation. We talked about the RY process, expectations, and the highs and lows we’re likely to feel over the next year. We punctuated the information overload with 20 second Pecha Cucha slides about ourselves which was an awesome way to get to meet everyone in our 50 person group.
  • Grabbed some (2 Liter) beers afterwards and headed down to the beach for a fun little beach party/impromptu photo session.

Milena and I are such fabulous models 😉

Mike and I are too 🙂

Put yo pinky rings up to the moon! (Mariya, my roommate is seriously the most legit)

  • Rolled that party into the night at Fabrique, a really cool bar/restaurant at the end of the promenade. I defffinitely made up for my Friday night in.. shout out to Dustin for the piggyback ride home!
  • Had so much fun on Saturday night that I almost missed the bus to Krka Waterfalls on Sunday morning. Thankfully I have the BEST friends that won’t leave a fellow remote behind and literally turned the bus around to get me #Kaiordie #trashgirl
  • Had literally the most amazing, relaxing Sunday ever exploring the Krka Waterfalls with my new friends- braving the freezing water for some epic shots then sitting in the grass with some beers, a solid playlist and some acro (which is quickly becoming my new favorite thing) 😀

Just a little acroyoga in the FREEZING COLD WATER *internally screaming*

Not a postcard

I swear this is real and not out of a storybook

I really don’t have words for how beautiful this place was

  • I was literally asleep by 9:30pm. Not in bed. Asleep. Lights out. Down for the count. I’m quickly realizing that sleep will be a very precious commodity on this trip..
